Islamabad: The National Institute of Health's Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication has confirmed two new cases of Wild Poliovirus Type 1 (WPV1) in Pakistan, one in Qambar, Sindh, and the other in Mandi Bahauddin, Punjab.
A laboratory official confirmed that this marks the third polio case from Sindh this year and the first from Punjab, bringing the total number of polio cases in Pakistan to five in 2025.
Earlier this year, three polio cases were reported from Badin and Larkana in Sindh and Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In 2024, a total of 74 WPV1 cases were reported across the country. These included 27 cases from Balochistan, 23 from Sindh, 22 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
